Call to join Project BioFinance, the SFRC-led consortium for the grant call BiodivTransform.
We are looking for experts in the following fields to join our interdisciplinary research team:
Social Justice and Transformative Change Specialist: Expertise in social justice, equitable transitions, and societal transformation, with a focus on integrating these principles into biodiversity and sustainability initiatives.
Geospatial Data Analyst: Proficient in analyzing and interpreting spatial data to map and monitor environmental changes, ecosystems, and biodiversity patterns across diverse landscapes.
Ecosystem Scientist: Knowledgeable in ecosystem dynamics, restoration, and conservation, with experience in studying interactions between species, habitats, and human activities.
Evolutionary Biologist with an Interest in Economics: An evolutionary biologist who is open to exploring parallels between biological evolution and economic systems, and who is enthusiastic about interdisciplinary approaches.
Project BioFinance
Description:
We aim to evaluate the biodiversity risks and impacts of economic activities within NUTS2 regions in Europe, while also making global comparisons. Additionally, we link these economic activities to the operations and supply chains of publicly listed companies and private projects in the regions. The result of the measures for biodiversity risk can be used to assess the economic levers to halt biodiversity loss and explore social and legal context of transformative change as enablers for protecting biodiversity.
To assess biodiversity risk for financial assets, we employ two complementary approaches: a norms-based and an activity-based methodology:
Norms-based approach: By leveraging earth observation data, we assess ecosystem conditions in a forward-looking, non-manipulable manner that doesn’t rely on company or regional disclosures. We establish a framework for activity norms that impact different ecosystems, and apply a risk measure, the GeoBiodivRisk that evaluates biodiversity risks linked to financial assets—including corporates, sovereign or regional entities, and private projects. This enables us to assess the vulnerability of financial issuers using the core-periphery model from the banking system.
Activity-based approach: Using natural-language models, we analyze news sources, social media, and financial filings to identify controversial activities that may signal potential biodiversity risks. This approach forecasts biodiversity risks at the sovereign, regional (country or region), or company level (private or public).
